The Foundations of TCCS Course Selections

Bible

Several courses of study at Tri-Cities Christian Schools are considered vital. Since TCCS believes that the whole philosophy of education is centered on the Word of God and the school seeks to teach students to develop the mind of Christ, a Biblical education is considered paramount. It is vitally important that each student is grounded in the Word of God as a basis for life decisions. Bible class is taught daily (through either Bible class or chapel) and is part of the regular academic rotation at TCCS.

Communication

To gain a thorough comprehension and command of the fundamental processes used in communicating is one of the objectives for the students at Tri-Cities Christians. Two courses of study carry out this objective: English and Speech. English is required each year of attendance. Speech is taught in the high school usually during the junior year. In the elementary, speech is taught through the use of oral presentations in the class.

Science

To produce an understanding and appreciation for God’s world, an awareness of man’s role in his environment and his God-given responsibilities to use and preserve it properly, is another objective for students attending TCCS. The academic discipline that fulfills this objective is science. Science is taught in every elementary grade yearly. A wide range of science classes are taught in the middle and high school and at least three units are required for graduation.

Mathematics

Mathematical education is considered vital to give the students command of the fundamental processes of math. Each grade level in the elementary teaches math. Presently three credits of mathematics are required for graduation. Beginning with the 2009-2010 freshman class, four units of mathematics will be required.

Social Studies

Tri-Cities Christian Schools considers the promotion of good citizenship to be of paramount importance. The teaching of good citizenship and appreciation of America is carried out through the social studies curriculum. Each elementary grade teaches social studies in some form. Three and one half units of social studies education are required for graduation.

Physical Education

Physical education meets the goal of promoting physical fitness, good health habits, and wise use of the body as the temple of God. All elementary grades have weekly physical education classes. Fifth and Sixth grades have two fifty minute periods a week; seventh- ninth have a fifty minute block per day. One credit of physical education is required for graduation.

Technology

Teaching computer skills is considered a vital part of the curriculum in today’s society. The premise that God is sovereign over technology should be taught at all ages. Students are taught basic parts of the computer and its uses. They are also taught skills to enable them to organize, process, and store high volumes of information. These skills along with library skills help the student learn to do independent research as well as present it in the proper written form. Students are introduced to and taught to use computer skills in grades K4 through six. Keyboarding is introduced in fourth. Upper elementary students learn how to maneuver through Microsoft 2007 as well as power point presentations. A more comprehensive keyboarding course is taught in the seventh grade. Eighth graders take a research class which enables them to locate and document credible sources on the internet; then correctly publish a formal research paper. Computer Studies, taught in ninth grade, includes advanced keyboarding, table column design, Access, Excel, Power Point and Publishing. CAD and web-design are in the five year projections for high school electives.

Fine Arts

The final area that is considered vital at Tri-Cities Christian Schools is the fine arts department. TCCS attempts to engender an appreciation of the fine arts through the development of the students’ understanding and personal expression of fine arts. This is accomplished through art, choir, band, hand chimes, and drama. During the junior year, students are required to take one semester of music appreciation and a semester of art appreciation. Art, music, and Spanish are taught in the elementary school.
